I put together some quick shots of some thing i got up to, this was made as an example of the exact thing that would be posted on the Mac & Jack blog regularly. When ever one of us gets up to some thing i think its important to share it on the blog. this makes intrest on the site. Note that the poster frame of the video uses the logo element and the video tittle. After some quick grading i think this is a good example of what style video the Mac & Jack blog should be updated with.

This is a mix of the element before and the header, I like the cleanness of it as oppose to the hand drawn look from the header of the site. The idea would be to have different text on the black box. this could be to tittle blog posts on the site or even stickers or a phrase we use. the main aim would be to keep this shape through out.

I want to completely re make the logo. im not to keen on my last idea. Using elements of the header i have started to make assets like the one above in illustrator. the logo has to be used on a variety of things like video thumbnails and packaging. it would be good if it could some times say the video tittle and not have to say the brand name. Im going to play around with this idea a bit more. I think using the circle would be good.

This is a close up example of the roll over working. The work page has square thumbnails. once clicked they will take the user to the actual full project page. The header used in this example is not the final one. its to high in the middle and could be made smaller. The headers of the pages are also using oswald that google web font.

This is the final header design, I was thinking along time about what text to use but i found this google web font called Oswald that i think works well. this means that this will all be text on the site. this will be great for google search ranking etc and is just generally good web practice. There will be a simple white roll over link of white when the text is hovered over. The words Mac & Jack could always go back to the index page that will also be the work page. This could have a green roll over.

New Header

I have redrawn the header image with pen on paper then i photographed it and cut it out in photo shop, after simply using select colour image i could then crop and adjust the image appropriately.

I wanted to make it smaller so i cut elements up and put them on different layers so i could play around with it a bit.

Then in illustrator i made a quick shape to place with the header.

After lining it all up till i was happy i deleted the relevant black bits so that the circle would come through whilst maintaining transparent background through the white dashed line on the circle.

It is now complete and only needs some menu items added. There will be some fine tuning like centralising the circle etc but im happy with the concept of this as a header. A much better development in design compared to my last.

Bellow are my first mock ups for my site. I have played with quite a few working mock ups but this is what i have so far. I quite like it for a start and have gone for a fixed centered site like my research has pointed to. The header is the only harder bit that is probably not final yet. As i dont currently have a logo its hard to know what it will look. I think the header needs more development.

This is a mock up of a project page, there will be a face book like and tweet button. The next and back buttons have been hand drawn to match the hearer image.

This is a mock up of the shop page, I will be using basket to go for the shopping cart.

I'm thinking the work or portfolio page with the thumbnails should be the home page. There is also a brief description on there as well.

Im going to produce an illustration piece thats based on one of my previous bits of work. I want to do some thing with drippy letters.

This is a dripping alphabet that im keen to use again. I want to do more letters and maybe use a phrase.

This was drawn in the same way as the alphabet then vectored and coloured in photoshop. I want to attempt a more advanced drawing than these and also make a video of the process for the blog.

This is the opening title sequence for the featured length documentary Handmade Nation (to be released in 2009). This sequence of stop animation was in 26 hours over the course of a 2 day "weekend". I came across a maker and creator called Max Mörtl, I was really inspired by his portfolio and loved looking at his work. most of it is completely achievable as well. He works in video and mainly in stop motion using paper objects or clay as his medium. bellow is his fantastic show reel. some of his work marries the origami shapes i have been looking at with animation perfectly.

This is a cool behind the scense video, its really instresting watching how they made the video, no 3-d software was used, purpley stop motion and patience. amazing.

Stop motion title sequence for Dutch science show "Het Klokhuis" (The Apple Core). It is Hollands oldest youth television show, covering everything from the history of dinosaurs to how an iPhone is made.

This was commissioned by advertising agency Kesselskramer, produced at Nexus Productions, and was made in collaboration with model maker / sculptor Jethro Haynes. The apples and core models were built using 3D printing technology in order to maintain the logo shape.

The above images and video's are all by Mike Crozier who made the previous video i just blogged, i really rate his work and love his graphic style. the paper cut out is a good idea and relevant to my previous research. I didn't mention it before ut his use of sound mainly apparent in the previous video is very very good and really helps make the video. when producing animation based work i think sound should be considered a very important aspect of it.

A really nicely put together video for LRG and there Artist Driven series. The video is pretty long as in its nearly 5 minutes. there are 3 songs and the scenes and locations change through out the video. I like this aspect of the video. if it didn't do this i would get bored very quickly. there is a good engaging mix of different camera shots. interestingly there is no actual 'real' sound. there usually just is music over the top. this video uses the whole shallow depth of field film look. i want to replicate this style when making my video's.

Dabs Myla Site

The Dabs and Myla site does work well. it consists of 7 pages. There is a large baner at the top and the navigation is built around that. the site is centered.

The home page has some info about whats been happening recently but its not regularly updated. there is a link to blog for that.

The 'Paintings' page displays all there chosen canvas work. its displayed by having square thumbnails that when opened they are displayed in a light box.

The Walls page is the same as thepaintings page in terms of layout and presentation.

When the shop button is clicked it takes you to a new tab that is just a simple big cartel page.

The Bio page is simple and has a few lines that describes who they are. there is a small image as well.

The contact page is the most simple page and just has a few lines . The header is still constant through out the site.

There blog link takes you to there blog. this is not integrated in the site its an external page like the shop. they use a simple word press page to do this.

Brief:-

Jack Wells and Tom Mac are a creative partnership that produces illustrative designs mainly for poster and tee-shirt distribution.

They have a distinct style that uses bold hand drawn type with cleanly cut vectored characters. After a recent competition win there has been online interest in future products from them. The pair needs branding and a consistent look in terms of logo and a platform for them to distribute and gain a following on.

Answer:-

Come up with a name for the pair to adopt and use, this will be used as appose to the artist’s full names. The pair often work on designs independently and don’t always collaborate. This work will still be created all under said name to help brand growth and content.

A website is needed and will mainly focus on a blog and research in to similar creative duo’s will have to be done, why are others successful? What makes people repeatedly visit web sites? When and how is the best way to deliver content online? It is essential to incorporate web 2.0 with in any brand now days so setting that up properly would also be needed. Linking the site with a Facebook and twitter page would be a good start.

Illustration of a new poster is to be produced in the typical style that the pair have adopted and want to continue with. A new tee-shirt design is also to be made.

A video to promote the release of this is going to be produced. One factor that makes this pair different is that one of them usually spray paints the designs on a large scale, this should be incorporated in to the video. The teaser video will make the design appear to have craft and more than just a regular design that has been put on to a t-shirt. An object of desire is essentially what needs to be created. With the help of ‘coming soon’ video’s that are well put together this can be achieved.

I have added some texture and while doing this played around with back ground noise, Im definitely using this with in the web site design as i feel it softens it a lot and also helps tie every thing in with paper. It needs some more thought but im definitely not using butter milk or two contrasting types within the logo. Color occurs when light in different wavelengths strikes our eyes. Objects have no color of their own, only the ability to reflect a certain wavelength of light back to our eyes. As you know, color can vary in differing circumstances. For example, grass can appear gray in the morning or evening or bright green at noon. Colors appear different depending on whether you view them under incandescent, florescent or natural sunlight. Colors also change according to their surroundings. You can see this by looking at the color squares below - the reddish outline box is the same color in all the examples.

Hue

Hue refers to the color itself. Each different hue is a different reflected wavelength of light. White light broken in a prism has seven hues: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. White light occurs when all the wavelengths are reflected back to your eye, and black light occurs when no light is reflected to your eye. This is the physics of light.

When it comes to using color in art, things get quite messy. Looking at the color wheel above, when using color pigments, the three primary colors used are yellow, blue and red. These three colors are blended together to produce other colors, called secondary colors, such as green, orange and purple. Mix enough colors together, and you get black. Pretty strange, eh?

Computer colors

Computer colors are produced by combining the three colors of red, green and blue together. Believe it or not, you can get yellow by combining these colors (I've never been able to figure out why, but you can!)

Print colors

Things get even dicier on computers when you go to print out these colors. Printing uses the CYMK convention which takes cyan (light blue), yellow, magenta (pinky red) and black inks and tries to recreate the color that your computer created with red, green and blue light.

Color Value
Color value refers to the lightness or darkness of the hue. Adding white to a hue produces a high-value color, often called a tint. Adding black to a hue produces a low-value color, often called a shade.
Intensity
Intensity, also called chroma or saturation, refers to the brightness of a color. A color is at full intensity when not mixed with black or white - a pure hue. You can change the intensity of a color, making it duller or more neutral by adding gray to the color. You can also change the intensity of a color by adding its complement (this is the color found directly opposite on the traditional color wheel). When changing colors this way, the color produced is called a tone.
When you mix complementary colors together, you produce a dull tone. However, when you put complementary colors side by side, you increase their intensity. This effect is called simultaneous contrast - each color simultaneously intensifies the visual brightness of the other color.

I have got it down to 2 potential briefs to work on, they are the following;

Arjo Wiggins or Diesel

Create an illustrated interpretation of a musical track that is experienced by the viewer in an unconventional and pioneering way

Create a viral movement amongst designers that unbreakably links Arjowiggins Creative Papers with creativity and the creative design process.

I like the challenge of the Diesel brief as i feel i have read it well and they are asking for some thing completely different, in a way a reinvention of music illustration. I think my initial ideas of user generated artwork could be good for this. I can myself taking this further and producing web site mocks and how it could be integrated within social media.
With the Arjo Wiggins brief i am fond of the broadness, it is a very hard brief as ive really looked deep in to it and the viral nature they are looking for adds a completely different level on things in terms of my initial ideas. I was keen to do a stand alone animation for this or a really fun stop motion but that really isnt what they are looking for. im going to give both these briefs a bit more thought and decide wich one i will take further.

I made my own t shirt out of some money (£10 note), by following a video i found on you tube i realised its not actually that hard. seeing this process animated would look pretty good and is definitely worth exploring. After this experiment i now am confident that i can make some thing good out of paper. I need to develop an idea that uses paper in this way interestingly if i was to use origami in my project. Animation could be the way.

This is great, nice simple interaction thats really simple. looking back at my idea for user generated illustration this is helpful for my. I had ideas of pre made illustrations changed by colour. this would be a very viable way of doing such a thing.

Looking at more work by zen bullets and not just the perth project i begin to really like this style of artwork. The way it lends its self to hundreds of posible out comes and unique compositions helps when thinking of different styles for the user generated content side of things.

"Maker of abstract things. Brightonian with a brummie accent." I attended a talk at DotBrighton with Zen Bullets and there he spoke about some work he did for the 2011 perth festival. This poped straight in to my head when looking at the Diesel Music Brief. Straight away i had user generated art work floating around and this would be a good starting point for research.

A little generative visualisation toy created for the 2011 Perth Arts Festival, in collaboration with my friends futuredeluxe. All of the generative branding we created, including print, video and TV spots (which I’ll be able to link to once they start rolling out) were created using ActionScript.

I really love this project and think it has worked really well, its good to see that a company are open to such good ideas and content. I think the images produced wrok well and although there is complete freedom for the user and many posible out comes the result is still controlled and i think this is an important thing when looking at user generated content. bellow are some more images from the project.

These are mocks of the interactive shoe in a shop window. using external microphones aimed at the floor it will only react to people walking past the point where the microphone is aimed as i learnt in my experiments using the final project. This is very achievable and low in maintenance for the shop staff. there is no reason for it to be adjusted once its been installed correctly. this is some thing that could have human interaction 24 hours a day. it would arguably be more popular or effective at night time. using a large screen or a back lite projection this could be moved around from shop to shop. a large scale screen would be more suitable for this.

During the forst week of this it would be good to have staff out side giving out flyers or encouraging people to interact but as i have found in my research when one person starts to relise whats happening people usually want to interact or investigate for them selves.

This is what the set up was when i was testing my processing project. i was keen to give it a try in a nice open space with a good projector. there was some fine tuning done while playing with the project.

This processing project basically animates the shoe up and down using sound as the input instead of a mouse position. I have used the microphone input to measure the sound level and add it to the image position in each loop that has been made. (similar to the last one) as the sound increases or continues the image moves higher and when it disappears off the top it changes and drifts back . if the sound stops the shoe will drift back and if the sound isn't high enough the shoe will hover and drift around un changed. the program has two modes, one is listen to the sound and move the shoe the other is when the shoe image has changed ignore the sound and just drift back to the home position before switching back to the listen mode.

This is based on an example that uses a microphone input with in the project.
An important thing with this project is that it initialises the sound objects correctly and when the program stops it calls the Stop function which shuts down the sound objects.

minim is library that is used to in put and out put sound. im only interested in the input for this project.

There is a class called MaxAmplitudeDetector based on an example that inherits/implements AudioListener this is taken from examples and is use to detect the sound recorded during each frame.

this is based on a sample that was found on processing.org that manipulates the image pixels z position according to its brightness. the sample was adapted to brake the shoe images down in to squares that represent pixels because the image are to large to do it at pixel level and the square size had to change according to how much we wanted to explode the image.

The idea was similar to the previous one but instead of a new image sliding in i wanted a new image to explode in, this didn't happen gust enough.

similar to the other experiments it creates a list of images, draw uses the mouse x position to work out the amount of movement we want, in this case its the explosion. the main difference with this one is that it introduces the idea of a class. a class allows you to capture all the properties and functions around the shoe.

each shoe has a draw function and explode function. draw just draws the image and explode draws the image as a series of squares that represent a range of pixels drawn as a square where the z position is a factor of the mouse position x.

same as the slide in slide out but as it slides left and right it drags a new shoe image in from the left or right depending on the direction of the sliding shoe.
The image changes as it slides out. the gap between the shoes changes as the main shoe slows down the trailing shoe catches up as if its connected by a piece of elastic.

MoveEnough is still present like the privies one.

there is a delay introduced so when things stop moving there is pause before it starts to drift back or move.

The shoe follows the mouse left and right and when the mouse is moved all the way off the screen a different shoe image slides in. if the mouse is static then the shoe drifts to the centre until it stops.

function set up - sets up size frame rate, loads the bg image, and creates a list of the file names of the shoe images as png's with transparent bg.

function draw - first it checks if the mouse has moved enough. if it has moved enough, if it has it sets the new shoe position. if it hasn't moved enough it sets a new position to centralise the shoe. all new positions are moved to but the rate is slowed down by a drag factor.

The drawShoe function draws the shoe and rotates it according to the x position which is actually the cursor position on the image.
In the main body of the program as the cursor moves over the centre point it changes to a different image of a shoe. This works well and although its very basic its given me ideas i want to try out. Its a long way off but it would be interesting to try web cam stuff even though Seb has said that its a long way off just swaping the mouse for motion detection. i think more exploring is needed.

For the FIFA World Cup, Nike set up the Nike Academy Soweto in Johannesburg, South Africa. The centre gave young footballers the opportunity to develop their football talent and use a series of digital interactive features. Nike asked Public to create one of the features for this centre.

"The "Nike Ball Man" feature placed a 3D model of a footballer constructed from footballs onto a multi-touch screen. Users could then, use the multi-touch screen to rotate, manipulate and zoom into a specific ball. Tapping the ball then delivered a football fact to the user."

After brainstorming and sketching i have kind of singled out a particular idea, my main inspiration for this is the Cadburys effective advertising particularly when looking at the gorila adverts. I want to use the product in the video that im making but not in an obvious boring 'look at this' kind of way. My idea is to produce a well shot short film thats unexpected and ultimately funny from the enexpected weird situation.

IDEA

The idea is to have a very large aquapax with some body wearing it and doing a stunt, i want the video to be well shot and definitely not have the 'amateur' feel about it. the idea is to have some body in roller blades wearing this so they are able to move quickly through people. the beginning should start with suspense and then a sudden reveal of some body in the packaging, music should be very epic so a power ballad style song would be perfect.

This is a good video explaining about the strategies that some one believes works for them. Dan Ackerman Greenberg who made the video has written a fantastic article and bellow are the key point thats he talks about;

Content is NOT King
If you want a truly viral video that will get millions of people to watch and share it, then yes, content is key. But good content is not necessary to get 100,000 views if you follow these strategies.

Don’t get me wrong: the content is what will drive visitors back to a site. So a video must have a decent concept, but one shouldn’t agonize over determining the best “viral” video possible. Generally, a concept should not be forced because it fits a brand. Rather, a brand should be fit into a great concept. Here are some guidelines we follow:

Make it short: 15-30 seconds is ideal; break down long stories into bite-sized clips
Design for remixing: create a video that is simple enough to be remixed over and over again by others. Ex: “Dramatic Hamster”
Don’t make an outright ad: if a video feels like an ad, viewers won’t share it unless it’s really amazing. Ex: Sony Bravia
Make it shocking: give a viewer no choice but to investigate further. Ex: “UFO Haiti”
Use fake headlines: make the viewer say, “Holy shit, did that actually happen?!” Ex: “Stolen Nascar”
Appeal to sex: if all else fails, hire the most attractive women available to be in the video. Ex: “Yoga 4 Dudes”

Core Strategy: Getting onto the “Most Viewed” page
So how do we get the first 50,000 views we need to get our videos onto the Most Viewed list?

Blogs: We reach out to individuals who run relevant blogs and actually pay them to post our embedded videos. Sounds a little bit like cheating/PayPerPost, but it’s effective and it’s not against any rules.
Forums: We start new threads and embed our videos. Sometimes, this means kickstarting the conversations by setting up multiple accounts on each forum and posting back and forth between a few different users. Yes, it’s tedious and time-consuming, but if we get enough people working on it, it can have a tremendous effect.
MySpace: Plenty of users allow you to embed YouTube videos right in the comments section of their MySpace pages. We take advantage of this.
Facebook: Share, share, share. We’ve taken Dave McClure’s advice and built a sizeable presence on Facebook, so sharing a video with our entire friends list can have a real impact. Other ideas include creating an event that announces the video launch and inviting friends, writing a note and tagging friends, or posting the video on Facebook Video with a link back to the original YouTube video.
Email lists: Send the video to an email list. Depending on the size of the list (and the recipients’ willingness to receive links to YouTube videos), this can be a very effective strategy.
Friends: Make sure everyone we know watches the video and try to get them to email it out to their friends, or at least share it on Facebook.

Title Optimization
It seems obvious, but people see hundreds of videos on YouTube, and the title and thumbnail are an easy way for video publishers to actively persuade someone to click on a video. Titles can be changed a limitless number of times, so we sometimes have a catchy (and somewhat misleading) title for the first few days, then later switch to something more relevant to the brand. Recently, I’ve noticed a trend towards titling videos with the phrases “exclusive,” “behind the scenes,” and “leaked video.”

Thumbnail Optimization

If a video is sitting on the Most Viewed page with nineteen other videos, a compelling video thumbnail is the single best strategy to maximize the number of clicks the video gets.

YouTube provides three choices for a video’s thumbnail, one of which is grabbed from the exact middle of the video. As we edit our videos, we make sure that the frame at the very middle is interesting. It’s no surprise that videos with thumbnails of half naked women get hundreds of thousands of views. Not to say that this is the best strategy, but you get the idea. Two rules of thumb: the thumbnail should be clear (suggesting high video quality) and ideally it should have a face or at least a person in it.

Commenting: Having a conversation with yourself
Every power user on YouTube has a number of different accounts. So do we. A great way to maximize the number of people who watch our videos is to create some sort of controversy in the comments section below the video. We get a few people in our office to log in throughout the day and post heated comments back and forth (you can definitely have a lot of fun with this). Everyone loves a good, heated discussion in the comments section – especially if the comments are related to a brand/startup.

Also, we aren’t afraid to delete comments – if someone is saying our video (or your startup) sucks, we just delete their comment. We can’t let one user’s negativity taint everyone else’s opinions.

We usually get one comment for every thousand views, since most people watching YouTube videos aren’t logged in. But a heated comment thread (done well) will engage viewers and will drive traffic back to our sites.

Strategic Tagging: Leading viewers down the rabbit hole
This is one of my favorite strategies and one that I think we invented. YouTube allows you to tag your videos with keywords that make your videos show up in relevant searches. For the first week that our video is online, we don’t use keyword tags to optimize the video for searches on YouTube. Instead, we’ve discovered that you can use tags to control the videos that show up in the Related Videos box.

I like to think about it as leading viewers down the rabbit hole. The idea here is to make it as easy as possible for viewers to engage with all your content, rather than jumping away to “related” content that actually has nothing to do with your brand/startup.

So how do we strategically tag? We choose three or four unique tags and use only these tags for all of the videos we post. I’m not talking about obscure tags; I’m talking about unique tags, tags that are not used by any other YouTube videos. Done correctly, this will allow us to have full control over the videos that show up as “Related Videos.”

I really love how this is a great thing to watch and share yet still a very comercial product, to me this is a successful viral advert. there is a good quote that is said during the making of the video and thats that this has a level of 'cool factor'! i think this is worth keeping in mind when im finalising my idea.
